When your goal is to look and feel young, healthy, and energetic, there’s nothing worse than looking in the mirror and seeing wrinkled eyes staring back at you.
Fortunately, there are several natural things you can do to stop eye wrinkles in their tracks and to prevent their unwelcome return.
In no time, you’ll look in the same mirror and see a pair of vibrant, wrinkle-free eyes!
Eat Your Vegetables
In addition to trimming your waistline, a nutritious diet will give you a youthful glow and vibrant skin. In fact, getting the right nutrients is one of the best things you can do to keep your skin healthy, tight, and wrinkle-free.
In one study, researchers compared 716 women’s facial wrinkles with their dietary habits. Results showed a higher intake of green and yellow vegetables was associated with a decreased wrinkling score.
Conversely, a higher intake of total fat was associated with skin elasticity. Higher saturated fat intake was also linked to more facial wrinkles. [1]
Make sure your skin gets all the benefits of nutrient-packed vegetables like celery, broccoli, and cucumber, and fruits like avocados, apples, and berries.
Don’t Squint
You may not need to “wear your sunglasses at night,” but you should definitely wear them during the day if you’re exposed to a lot of sun. Otherwise, you may become accustomed to squinting, which causes creases around your eyes.
If you use prescription glasses or contacts, be sure to wear those as well. If you need to squint to see small print, it may be the time to invest in a pair of reading glasses.
Use Sunscreen
Constant exposure to the sun causes wrinkles, so sunscreen can block the sun’s harsh rays to prevent wrinkles and skin damage.
If sunscreen irritates the area around your eyes, use an SPF 15 eye cream. [2] Some moisturizers or foundations contain sunscreen as well.
If you’re out in the sun all day, make sure to reapply frequently.
Drink Water
Drinking water removes toxins that build up in the skin and prevents skin from drying out; so in essence, getting enough water prevents wrinkles. [3]
Women should drink about 2.2 liters (9 cups) per day, and men should drink about 3 liters (13 cups) per day. [4]
To get more water in your day, take a water bottle with you to work or when you go out, drink at least a glass with each meal, and make sure to drink water before, during, and after exercise.
Get Enough Sleep
Losing sleep makes your body produce excess cortisol, a hormone that breaks down skin cells. [5] Additionally, sleep puts stress on the body, affecting blood circulation. Many theorize lack of sleep causes blood to pool under the eyes, which contribute to dark circles; though, this is not proven.
So, aim for 7 to 9 hours a night, depending on your individual needs. Also, be aware the best position to sleep in is on your back. Other positions may increase sleep lines and wrinkles. [5]
Use Vitamins
As mentioned earlier, eating a healthy diet consisting of nutrient-rich food is essential to maintaining healthy skin. This is because many foods are naturally rich in vitamins and minerals which contribute to skin health and protect against aging.
In one study, a topical formula containing 15% vitamin C and 1% vitamin E was found to protect against UV rays, reducing skin damage. [6] These vitamins may also improve already existing wrinkles.
Avoid Smoking
Cigarette smoke releases an enzyme that breaks down collagen and elastin, which ages skin. [5] Additionally, experts found smoking chronically deprives the skin of oxygen and nutrients, making the skin appear pale and uneven. [7]
And, to top it all off, “smokers use certain muscles . . . that cause them to have dynamic wrinkles that nonsmokers do not,” explains WebMD expert Jonette Keri.[7]
Consequently, quitting smoking has a profound on multiple areas of skin health.
Give Your Eyes a Massage
Massages aren’t just for your back anymore. Use a few drops of any oil rich in vitamins and antioxidants, (such as grape seed oil, olive oil, or coconut oil), and massage under your eyes in circular motions.
Soaking in these nutrients may give the area around your eyes the power to fight off wrinkles. [8]
Use Natural Remedies
Although not necessarily scientifically proven to reduce wrinkles, some people have found natural remedies benefit skin and reduce wrinkles.
Here are some of the most popular:
Grapeseed Oil: Grapeseed oil protects skin’s natural collagen, and its antioxidants may fight free radicals that damage the skin. [9]
Egg Whites: Egg whites are said to slow the skin’s aging process by nourishing the skin. To make an egg white face mask, separate the egg white from the yolk and beat with a fork or whisk before applying to your face.
Allow it to dry on your face for 10 to 15 minutes. Some people have reported breakouts from using egg whites, so be aware it doesn’t work for everyone. [10]
Avocado Oil: Like grapeseed oil, avocado contains antioxidants to boost collagen production. It’s also high in skin-protecting vitamins and in lecithin, a fatty acid that may keep skin soft and moisturized. [11]
Use Skin Creams
Washing your face daily and using facial creams, wrinkle creams, and moisturizes cannot be underestimated. WebMD suggests selecting creams that contain alpha-hydroxy acids that lift away dead skin cells, retinoids that repair sun damage and wrinkles, or pentapeptides that increase collagen production. [5]
Make sure you read customer reviews first to select a skin cream that has consistently worked for other people.
